[...] In the last of my series (honest) on editng apps (Pt2 and 3), rather than look for an all in one application for editing, I’m looking at apps that are designed to do a specific task in the editing process – the capability of which is missing in your current app – or specific things that might be worth having in a ‘toolkit’ – you never know when you might need it.
Hi Cyndy

I agree, skill in. driving the kit and pushing the buttons amounts for 90% of the time you save in editing but its less than 10% of what being a good editor is about.

I remember working with a producer who struggled to work with non-linear. When reviewing stuff, I would skip back and forth through footage as we chatted and he admitted he found it really hard to get a handle on the flow of the story without watching it through in a 'linear' fashion.

Andy
Thank you for enlightening all of us who favor a single or only two editing programs. One thing I'd like to point out is that the program is only part of the picture...editing is a process. I'm sure you've seen the changes in technology....from editing double system or single system film to Umatic to Beta to digital tape to nonlinear. Back in the 70's in the states many newsrooms made the swtich from film to tape - and from what I heard, about 20-25% of the shooters/editors weren't able to handle it. The new technology - tape - baffled them. They were used to seeing and handling film. At my station it literally happened overnight - we left work one day shooting and editing film and the next day we got a couple hours training and went out in the field with tape. The same thing is happening today with nonlinear - but at a much slower and easier to swallow pace. Once folks get the concept - that the process is the same - they only need to get over their fear of the technology.

[...] Newspaper Video:Editing and Apps. Part 3. Andy Dickinson wraps up his must-read series of articles on video editing apps, concentrating on the free and low-cost programs available on all three platforms. Great thanks to Andy for pulling all this stuff together, so all I need to do is point my students at it. [...]
