I believe that the main reason for not going off-site is fear.
Fear that the MD wont like it and will cause shit. Fear the the company libel policy will not protect off-site content (different laws in the states). Fear that there could be copyright issues.
Fear that the central IT people will feel snubbed (which they very often deserve to be) and make no effort to help when things go wrong - and they will say "well, its the off-site stuff thats the problem" no matter what.
And it is a reality. There is something to fear. Short sighted and digitally illiterate MDs allied to a tier of middle management that sees the digitalization process erroding their power-bases are possibly the single biggest problem in implementing the necessary transition from analogue to digital. Digitalization is a process that is at least as much (in fact much more I believe) a mental as a technical transition.

There is usually a way to bypass the longer process of creating an in-house multimedia product in the current age where audio and visual capture equipment are relatively cheap for the personal user and there's a few decent options for open-source/cheap software for editing multimedia content.

The slideshows do look good and it's something we're looking at doing at PeterboroughToday.co.uk.

Hi it's David from the Advertiser. Thanks for your kind coments and feedback.

We started from nothing, with nothing. i.e. just our personal ipods and buying the recording adaptor from PC world out of our own pockets. then, being a bit dissapointed with the mic quality updating the mic but still using the ipod. I don't know if you've seen my latest show, The Animal hospital' I think you may be more impressed with the audio. I certainly THINK I did better.

As for off site hosting, It was'nt hard to decide to go our own way to get the IT soloution. It just would have taken more time than I could allow.

Thanks again for your thoughts.

I agree. I think audio is the real-key to a lot of this.

I've been lurking on that debate both on the blogs and the newspaper mailing list and I was pondering a post on the idea of ressurecting the clapperboard so that you could use your hi-Q mp3 recorder for sound and your cheap camcorder for pics - all synced up with a clapper :)

The technicalities aside, the big issue for me with the Croydon stuff was the a) the lack of local papers doing this kind of thing and b) the fact that they had gone off-site to do it.

Both things that the US seem to embrace but the UK, as yet hasnt got.

Andy
Thoroughly enjoyed the slideshow. It does have some wonderful moments, however it plays right into a discussion that Howard Owens and I have about the need to good audio (our discussion centers on mike inputs on camcorders). This video would have been perfect had the photographer placed his mike (or recorder) closer to the sound sources - both the interviews and the music sources. As it is, it has the ambiance of being there but with a struggle to understand the sound.
