There is an embed option for the chart rather than the image export from Google spreadsheet. If you use the image URL from that the image will update as the spreadsheet does (with a refresh) but only based on existing content. 

Maybe there is a better way to do it using the google chart stuff directly rather than through spreadhseets.</description>
