This is some of the stuff that’s crossed my eyes between October 10th through October 14th:

The Public Domain Mark – Creative Commons – Creative Commons announces the release of its Public Domain Mark, a tool that enables works free of known copyright restrictions to be labeled in a way that allows them to be easily discovered over the Internet.

Poll: When should you retweet the competition? – Lost Remote – “When (if ever) should a news organization retweet something from a competing news organization?” aks lost remote. The results are an excellent example of the ‘polite to your face, rude to your back’ school of linking

Kinetic typography as a storytelling technique – If you’re asking “What the hell is that” then this post, with great examples is for you.

The BBC is essentially a guest in these spaces.”

Blogging and Journalism; Form and Function – One Man and His Blog – “the most common category error I see around blogging and journalism is hacks shoving straight inverted pyramid, 350 word news stories (or opinion pieces) into a blog and calling it blogging.”

Stories need to be targeted to those who might be able to improve the situation. And journalism’s products — which are more than its stories — must be designed to facilitate this.”

MSN Spaces Closing, becomes WP.com — Matt Mullenweg – Windows Live (formerly MSN) Spaces is shutting down and migrating their 30m+ users to WordPress.com. Four years ago I was fairly worried as every internet giant (Microsoft, AOL, Yahoo, Google) had a hosted blogging service. Now only Blogger remains, and is firmly in our sights.

Foursquare is the biggest one besides Facebook Places and they’re just over a million users. Twitter is 100 million. But Facebook is 500 million.
Twitter Journalism » Tips For “Live Tweeting” An Event – “The event itself, whether it be a court trial, sporting event, press conference, or some sort of breaking news, does not matter much. The basics are pretty much the same. Here’s some tips”

The BBC and missed data journalism opportunities | Online Journalism Blog – “I’ve tweeted a couple of times recently about frustrations with BBC stories that are based on data but treat it poorly. As any journalist knows, two occasions of anything in close proximity warrants an overreaction about a “worrying trend”. ” And here is Pauls view

Lessons from the BBC on online video that works | Reportr.net – A pointer to the recent Brave News Worlds: Navigating the New Media Landscape report with some interesting snippets for video enthusiast.

The H1 Zoom – A review of the H1 Zoom by Gernan video journalist Roman Mischel

University of Central Lancashire heads student magazine awards shortlist – Some rampant departmental promotion.”The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has received nine nominations in the shortlist for this year’s Magazine Academy awards.”

My Henry Stewart talk about ‘Blogging, Twitter and Journalism’ | Online Journalism Blog – Paul Bradshaw has recorded a 48 minute presentation covering ‘Blogging, Twitter and Journalism‘ for the Henry Stewart series of talks. It’s designed for journalism students. Well worth a listen

The still-evolving Newsonomics of digital transition » Nieman Journalism Lab – Ken Doctor does some maths – “Start with 60 percent. That’s the rough percentage of costs that might come out of an enterprise, as print production, printing, circulation and distribution expenses, along with those jobs, were eliminated. The 40 percent or so remaining? Figure about 20 percent of costs are newsroom, and 10-15 percent are ad sales. Add in a reduced (from print heyday) number of finance, HR, marketing and management jobs. As one publisher told me: “There are still way too many managers around, managing lots fewer people and lots less money.” (thanks to @agranado)

When crowdsourcing is your only option | Online Journalism Blog – “PriceOfWeed.com is a great example of when you need to turn to crowdsourcing to obtain data for your journalism”

Beware, journalists: Apple is not your friend | yelvington.com – A prime piece of link/apple fanboy baiting. Yelvington almost hits the point – ok apple et al may be sociapthic physcopathic organisations but they don’t hate you. They just don’t care. That’s different from actively hating you. I think more than a little of Robert Ringer’s paranoia has slipped through
