• News International gets its own Huffington Post – News Ltd is set to launch The Punch, its biggest digital venture since it created news.com.au, according to Aussie media site Mumbrella

• Part One: a theory of storytelling – “What makes a story memorable? Is it the plot; the setting; the characters; use of imagery and figurative language? Although these are standards in written stories, there are additional elements in visual storytelling that must be taken into account. ” Cyndy Green looks at visual storytelling in two parts
• SEO strategies for publishers – “How can publishers maintain high visibility on search engines without losing their brand distinction? Decide where to draw a line in the sand” So says Drew Broomhall, Times Online’s Search Editor. He’s an ex-student of mine. Very proud.

The big read today, for everyone, has been Clay Shirky’s essay on thinking the unthinkable . A more cogent discussion of the issues around newspapers would be hard to find. Lots chimed with me and to pick one part to quote kind-of defeats the structure of the piece. So worth a read though.

Round and round this goes, with the people committed to saving newspapers demanding to know “If the old model is broken, what will work in its place?” To which the answer is: Nothing. Nothing will work. There is no general model for newspapers to replace the one the internet just broke.

On the heals of Shirky’s essay comes news that the Seattle P-I is to publish last edition Tuesday. Given Clay’s take and the general shifting to the recognition that change is, well, inevitable, they may feel like they are in a goldfish bowl but this will be one closley watched (re)start for a paper going online.

We don’t have reporters, editors or producers—everyone will do and be everything. Everyone will write, edit, take photos and shoot video, produce multimedia and curate the home page. That’ll be a training challenge for everyone, but we’re all up for the challenge and totally ready to pick up all these skills.

• 6 Unique Twitter Visualizations – Many may be familiar with these apps but if you are new to twitter this may just prompt a few more follows and drag you deeper in to the Twitter is great camp

• YouTube to block music videos for UK users | Technology | Reuters – Put this next to the Hulu news this week and you can start to see the impact of the big guns waking up/resigning themselves to online delivery platforms and flexing their legal muscles as they do so.

• French Online Video Audience Grows 16 Percent in the Past Year to 27 Million Viewers in January – “Driven by the popularity of YouTube.com (which accounted for 97 percent of all videos viewed on the property), Google Sites grew 25 percent versus year ago to further solidify its position as the leading online video viewing property in France, attracting 15.2 million viewers in January 2009.”
• Hulu Now No. 2 Online-Video Site, Behind YouTube – As a “big player” venture this will, no doubt, hearten many broadcasters. But the content has to match the platform which it obviously does in this case. This should be more of lesson to those broadcasters cutting back on production and looking to online delivery (cough…ITV..cough)
• David MacLean: Journalist – Consummate examples of combative posting from Dave. Five things I hate about bloggers, Three reasons why Twitter is useless to me as a journalist are just two great posts to have a go at.

• Headlines and Deadlines: The Year of the Blog (Part I) – A first round of reflections on a year of blogging from Alison Gow. One of the most thoughtful and interesting journo bloggers around.
• PLEASE STAND BY: Video: Reporters using Flip cameras in the field – Sarah Hartley proves a treasure trove of links today with this nice profile of The Sunday Mail’s Charles Lavery who “went out to Forward Operating Base Inkerman in Afghanistan for the paper recently” and took a Flip HD with him.

• Death of newspapers | Salon – “Reporting must be kept alive. With all its limitations and faults, it is a light that illuminates the world outside ourselves. And in an increasingly virtual and solipsistic age, that light is needed more than ever.” Yeah, that sounds good. Unfortunatly you have to read through three pages of derivative twaddle like “If newspapers die, so does reporting. That’s because the majority of reporting originates at newspapers. Online journalism is essentially parasitic. Like most TV news, it derives or follows up on stories that first appeared in print. “
• Google’s UK chief Matt Brittin could prove a saviour – Telegraph – “Google is doing an “awful lot” to help traditional media work out how to survive in the “new multi-channel online world”. So much, in fact, that advertising magazine New Media Age named Mr Brittin, who joined Google last January after three years at Trinity Mirror, as the person who made the “greatest individual contribution to new media” in 2008. “

• At Last, Google Funds a Bailout for Reporters – Time Armstrong ” the handsome and high-ranking Google executive who runs the company’s advertising operations” is funding local journalism start-up, Patch, through his personal investment fund. Is this really google putting some its “billions behind the project of saving journalism”?
• Patch.com – A community news start up that has Google big wig Tim Armstrongs – as mentioned in the Valleywag story above.
• The BBC’s “Points Of View” online culture clash – Part 2 – currybetdotnet – 17 February, 2009 – Martin does part 2 of his look at the “the current furore surrounding the BBC’s Points Of View messageboard” His experience is really interesting and his conclusion has food for thought for for anyone involved in forums. “The only real reason for having a Points Of View messageboard is if programme makers and executives engage with the views expressed there. If it isn’t going to be able to achieve that, then it isn’t great value for the rest of us who are paying the Licence Fee to subsidise a chat forum for the 50 or so regular users there.”
• Seventeen regions into nine: How the updated ITV local news services will operate – “From yesterday, Penzance residents found themselves in the same ITV regional news area as Bristol. By the end of the month, Carlisle residents will be getting their local bulletin broadcast from Newcastle. Welcome to ITV’s regional news service, 2009 style.” Carving new battle lines in to the media playing field

• Motorway camera map – JP’s deal with the highways agency produces a neat little map. The next step is to make it mobile friendly and I think this could attract quite a bit of ad revenue.
• New York Times lets users build things with its content (open API) | Online Journalism Blog – “Here’s another case study to add to the list of examples of distributed journalism: the New York Times has finally launched its articles API.” I missed this article whilst on holiday but it keys in to my new years conviction about going open source.
• 10 things you can tweet about on Twitter | Online Journalism Blog – “If you’re struggling to think of what to talk about on Twitter, here are some suggestions” Paul Bradshaw has some top tips for things to post other than ‘trying this twitter thing” :)
• BJP documents Terrorism Act photography event | Journalism.co.uk Editors’ Blog – “The British Journal of Photography (BJP) is covering the photographic ‘event’ against the new Counter-Terrorism Act 2008, which comes into force today, with live updates and images posted to Twitter.” Important stuff
• What Facebook’s revised terms of use mean for your content | Jacobson Attorneys: the new media law firm – “Onerous terms of use are not unusual on the Web but Facebook’s terms of use go further than Google’s and certainly much further than Plaxo’s, a possible competitor for Facebook’s users in the near future” A US focus but some interesting ‘legal’ perspective on the Facebook TOC debate
• Free Twitter SMS Updates For Europe and the Rest of the World – TWe2 may bring sms back to UK twitterers who have been missing it
• The BBC’s “Points Of View” online culture clash – currybetdotnet – Great notes and reflections on “the way that the BBC has been trying to discuss future developments for their interactive online services like blogs and messageboards in an open way” and the reaction to it from other parts of the media.
• Redundant subeditors – a reply to my critics – Roy Greenslade replies to “critics” of his view on subs
• Kindle still seems unnecessary | Marginal Utility | PopMatters – “Basically publishers have no incentive to encourage people to read books on screens and every incentive to get them to enjoy the fetish of the object.” Thanks to Nigel Barlow for the tip
• Lego Follow Focus – A film geeky one this, but a great example of how lego is fast becoming the mother of invention
• ITV puts Friends Reunited up for sale – The big suprise here is that it’s take so long for them to do it. The article suggests that ITV looks to its version of iplayer to boost revenues. But a platform for content only works if you have content. Still, Friends Reunited was never going to do that and it seems that the only winners in this were Steve and Julie Pankhurst who sold the thing to ITV in the first place.
• Markmedia: Should journalists have separate twitter accounts for work and personal use? – Mark Comerford is in the middle of a post looking at the question of professional identity on Twitter and want’s your opinion. Go and take his poll and let him know what you thing via twitter at @markmedia
• MediaShift Idea Lab . Spot.Us Deals with the Good and Bad of Limitations | PBS – Dave Cohn does some reflecting on Spot Us. Some could do a lot worse than look at his list of ideas for Spot Us as a list of ideas to try in their newsrooms. But one spot of great news is that ” After this next round of development the source code will be in a much better state and I’ll do a blog post on how anyone can take it, launch their own “community funded reporting project” for very little cost and I hope some take me up on the challenge.”
• Microsoft Recite: Voice Record and Voice Search – ReadWriteWeb – “Recite lets you record short voice clips of ‘remembrances’ and then search for specific words, again by using your voice; essentially it’s an audio recorder with audio search capability.” I haven’t looked in to how long a note can be but this could be a cool J-tool. Especially as it’s aimed at mobile devices.
• Message to journalism & broadcast teachers… – “Toss this out to your classes – ask them what they love about each type of media and what they hate. Ask them to design the perfect media – what elements would they keep/what would they toss?” That’s my seminar written then : ) Seriously though. This kind of thing needs saying on a regular basis as we can get a bit complacent.
• Emily Bell: Fighting talk is not best start to a debate on press freedom – “More alarmingly for the PCC, its own members are now also engaged with this cross-section of regulators looking for some kind of salvation, which goes beyond self-help. It feels as though the pact of a free and self-regulated press in exchange for a free-market model is all but fractured.”

Here is what I cast my eye over at the weekend:

• Five barriers to journalists using Twitter – Sarah Hartley has a great list of barriers – and rebuttals – to the twitter question. My personal fave is number 3. “I don’t have the time. Your competitors have found time.”
• The Public Editor – A Balancing Act on the Web – Op-Ed – NYTimes.com – The New York Times public editor Clark Hoyt ponders the best elements of digital whilst stressing that whether its print or the web, “the heart of it all is the scope, depth and authority of New York Times reporting”
• The All-Digital Newsroom of the Not-So-Distant Future – I missed this one when it came out but I enjoyed Steve Outing’s take on the changes in newsrooms. He’s “emphasized that the reporter/bloggers in this reinvented digital news organization will interact with readers and participate in social networks where they spread word of their work and collect followers or fans. “
• Reporting for New Media in Six Easy Steps! – I like some of the points in this slideshow. “Do your work , Show your work.” I’d add share your work but it’s a neat presentation
• I Don’t Read The Newspaper – Robert Courtemanche admits what many do but would never ‘fess up to. “I may be a heretic, but I still believe in the power of journalism. I just don’t believe in newspapers as a delivery model anymore. That was the 20th Century, we don’t live there anymore.”
• A typical day in an online-first newsroom « Save the Media – A nice round up of how digital has changed the day of a journalist in the newsroom. I don’t see a mention of RSS feeds in the list. Maybe it’s implied but it would save time.
• Google Chrome for Mac (First Screenshots) – Being a mac owner is always a bit of waiting game. Not sure if I would jump Firefox for this but, the other thing you can say about mac owners is our head is easily turned by the shiny new.
• Commandments of the (bad) webjournalist – The 10 commandments of bad web journalism.
• Are you enslaved by your mobile device? Take this test! van Elsas’s Weblog on new media & technologies and their effect on social behavior – I didn’t take Alexander’s test. Sadly, I knew the answer. But it’s fun.
• FIRST LOOK: PROTOTYPE FOR THE NEW NYTIMES.COM – Juan thinks that the NYTimes prototype article skimmer is dull. In the context of other newspapers and media sites I think it’s pretty brave and very usuable.
• QIT #6 News and music are incomparable | Joanna Geary – “the news industry doesn’t really believe its content has any value other than to provide structure around which to place advertising.” and despite it’s best efforts it will struggle to turn that thinking around
• Illustrative video – Fabian Mohr asks why there isn’t more illustrative video on websites
