• Poll: When should you retweet the competition? – Lost Remote – “When (if ever) should a news organization retweet something from a competing news organization?” aks lost remote. The results are an excellent example of the ‘polite to your face, rude to your back’ school of linking
• Kinetic typography as a storytelling technique – If you’re asking “What the hell is that” then this post, with great examples is for you.
• BBC adopts thoughtful guidelines on social media | Reportr.net – Alf thinks that the new approach to social media ” is a tacit acknowledgement that different social media sites and services have their own rules and patterns of behaviour. The BBC is essentially a guest in these spaces.”
• Tips & Tricks: Sharing Google Docs Like a Pro – Official Google Docs Blog – “We’ve explained our new sharing model before, but, in recognition of National Cyber Security Awareness month, we want to make sure you’re aware of your options for sharing your documents.”
• Blogging and Journalism; Form and Function – One Man and His Blog – “the most common category error I see around blogging and journalism is hacks shoving straight inverted pyramid, 350 word news stories (or opinion pieces) into a blog and calling it blogging.”

• Web Journalism’s rules of tech engagement – I really like the list but I’m not sure that we it moves anything on. It’s kind of assumes that journalism is some how resistant to technology. One informs the other and the ‘basic j101′ argument suggest that it stands alone. Do we need to be less ‘basic’?

• 2010 Social Journalism Study | CisionUK – Cision Europe’s Social Journalism study conducted among UK, French and German journalists in July, underscores that Social Media have become standard tools for journalists supporting their daily workflow. Today, journalists in all three countries use Social Media to source stories as well as to promote their own work.

Four years ago I was fairly worried as every internet giant (Microsoft, AOL, Yahoo, Google) had a hosted blogging service. Now only Blogger remains, and is firmly in our sights.

That’s the rough percentage of costs that might come out of an enterprise, as print production, printing, circulation and distribution expenses, along with those jobs, were eliminated. The 40 percent or so remaining? Figure about 20 percent of costs are newsroom, and 10-15 percent are ad sales. Add in a reduced (from print heyday) number of finance, HR, marketing and management jobs. • Tweeting the scanner from a breaking story – Lost Remote – “Baltimore Sun crime reporter Justin Fenton (@justin_fenton) did a great job tweeting from the scene of today’s murder-suicide at John Hopkins” But in amongst his tweets were updates based on what he heard on a scanner. Lost remote asks if this was the right thing to do..
• Baltimore Sun curates Twitter List for Hopkins shooting -A kind of follow up to the previous link:  ”Here’s a very good example of when to use Twitter Lists. The Baltimore Sun has created @BaltimoreSun/HopkinsShooting as a stream of tweets from several sources reporting on the shooting at Johns Hopkins Hospital.”
• Analyst: tablets will kill print newspapers ‘in our lifetimes’ – “Wireless analyst J. Gerry Purdy writes that the advent of digital tablets will bring about the death of the print newspaper industry “in our lifetimes”:” way to get yourself noticed. Still, I hear rumors that newspaper execs are putting all their money in to life extending research to head off the problem
• Guardian monitors the coalition agreement – “The coalition government’s agreement was signed with fanfare. But how much of its programme for government has been achieved so far? We present our comprehensive audit”
• Free Final Cut Pro Video Tutorials – A great list of free FCP tutorials. It also includes lists for other apps in the Studio suite and photoshop for FCP. V.useful
• Wanted: Better photo editing/transmission app for mobile journalists – Damon Kiesow puts down his request for a mojo photo app after reading a post on lifehacker that “focused simply on how to get photos from your camera to your iPhone or iPad.” Great stuff says Kiesow. But shouldn’t it be easier.

• What do they read? – Can looking at the most emailed, editors pick and most viewed/commented give an impression of what works online? Frédéric Filloux has a go.
• An example of Data journalism from Germany – A nice look at how Zeit Online has created a data map of right-wing related violence.
• News of the World to go behind online paywall | Media | guardian.co.uk – “News International is leading the industry by delivering on its commitment to develop new ways of making the business of news an economically exciting proposition.” Apparently!
• Newspaper Society: New law for family court will cause ‘regime of secrecy’ – “The Newspaper Society claims the Act will place more restrictions on the press and not allow for greater public confidence in the system”
• From a 15-year-old’s blog to MSM: Bleachgate and Miracle Mineral Solutions | Online Journalism Blog – “Journalists wanting evidence of the value of blogs should take a look at the ‘Bleachgate’ story which has taken a month to filter up from 15-year-old Rhys Morgan’s blog post through other skeptic and science bloggers into The Guardian.”
• HatefuI comments: is scrapping anonymous comments a solution? – The editors weblog rounds up some views on managing anonymous comments “Newspapers constantly have to walk the fine line between freedom of speech and respect for individual rights. Is it time for them to hold their website commenters to rigorous standards?”
• ProPublica launch the Nerd Blog – Propublica launch a blog for nerds and news application junkies. “So what the heck is a “news application”? It’s an interactive web page that uses software instead of words and pictures to do journalism.”
